It keeps rain, falling debris and nesting birds or rodents out of an open flue, which protects the masonry and the appliance below from moisture and blockage. And its mesh, sized and rated as a spark arrestor, stops embers from an active fire from escaping upward and stops outside sparks or debris from entering. In most of the country the first job gets more attention. In the Santa Clara Valley, where fall Diablo winds regularly bring dry, gusty conditions and where several of our service-area cities border open wildland, the second job deserves equal weight.
